Long Distance Research

For researchers who are abroad or in Brazil, but outside Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region, the Brazilian National Library (BN) offers the long distance research service.

The attendance at long distance includes:

  • Information, survey and compilation of bibliographical records
  • Reproduction of the heritage (microfilming and digitation)

Tips for a successful research

  • Consult BNDigital and Digital Periodicals, which congregate some of BN most important documents in digital version, high resolution, making the reading possible in the proper screen as well as the printing.
  • Consult the Bibliographical Records Catalogue raised by users request.
  • Make a previous research in the General Catalogue of BN Works, using the website tools of search, and indicate some works that you would like to consult.
  • Detail to the maximum the object of your research to have access to the most relevant material for your studies.
  • Plan your research beforehand. BN team tries to offer high level answers, linked to the directed requests. It demands time and devotion, but all requests are complied.

How to use the long distance research service

    Fill in the Research Request Form, providing detailed and accurate information about the object of your research.

    Based on the information sent, BN team will carry out the research in the heritage and will get in touch by email indicating some of the best references for consultation.

    In case a heritage item reproduction is needed, the budget and the alternatives for sending the material will be presented, which can include COMPACT DISC or microfilm.

    Researches result may be affected by two factors that interfere with the possibility of work reproduction: the general state of conservation and the Copyright law, which restricts documents reproduction in public domain.
